On Monday, Middle School artists learned various clay construction techniques and then used them to create a sculpture of a bird. Each student chose a species of bird and used photos and scientific illustrations for reference as they worked on their pieces. While creating their bird sculptures, students practiced using the “score and slip” method and both additive and subtractive methods of sculpting. They also experimented with different ways of creating realistic looking texture using a variety of tools and techniques. Next week, they will complete their pieces with paint and varnish. It was wonderful to witness these young artists solving problems effectively and creating interesting and realistic looking sculptures!
